Default 38 Super and 10mm loads

This year I've got two new Calibers to load for.

Anyone load 38super and 10mm?

Feel free to share your loads and wisdom!

I've got both W231 and just ordered some TightGroup.

Google "Winchester 231 being phased out" .

Short version is: Mfg can produce powders like tite group in a shorter period of time and want to phase out 231. However, shooters WANT 231. So, the Mfg is reducing production of 231, but not (yet) suspending production.

My suggestion is to use the powder you have, and enjoy it, but build your future loads on a more accessible powder.

231 will work in the 10mm but not great for it. Tight group would probably be better. I use Autocomp for my 10mm loads. I can give you some load data I have run when I get off work late tonight.

Thanks

I know 10mm is weak with W231 but its the only thing I have and I needed to set up the press any way.
So I knocked out 300 rounds at 5.9gr of w231 under Berry's plated 180 grain FPs.
That should give me about 1050-1100 I would hope.
It should be good range ammo for the girls.

Now if I can just get off to the range!

Yeah I figured.
I was able to get a couple of 8 # jugs a few months back.
It's a shame.
I love how it measures, smells and performs in 45 and .38 special.

Guess all good thing come to an end

off the top of my head I think you are good up to 6.8 with 180 but again I will get my numbers posted Monday. these should be good range rounds but will be dirty too. Berry's are good but for the 10mm I don't like them as much because Berrys has a max of 1250fps I think would have to double check and if you are using the 10mm you should be pushing 1350+ to get full effect out of the round. but for range rounds that would be very good at 1000-1100 fps.

OK here is what I got:

135gr fmj with 231 7.0 grain will give you 1177fps (average) 7.5 will give you 1343fps
155fr HP 231 7.3 is 1250fps 5.8 is 1000fps
180gr HP 321 5.4 is about 1000 6.2 is 1110fps (my range load if I have to use 231
200gr fmj 231 5.0 is 900 fps 5.8 1072 fps

hope this helps. this is all I have ever ran through the crony with 231. I try to use autocomp or other brands for the 10mm to get its max potential but 231 does work fine. I find it dirty though and a bit sluggish compared to say autocomp.....fire away!!

So is 6.2 pretty much the limit using 231 in a Dan Wesson supported chamber?
Hodgdon tops out at 5.8 with 180 gr fmj's at about 1061 I think, but I suspected it can be higher when using a supported ramped barrel like the Silverback.

Ummmm well I use my high power loads for hunting in my Glock but that is with an aftermarket barrel too. However I used them in my Colt Delta and had no issues fwiw
