That's a very good price, although I don't like a chevron reticle.

Wow, price is up $150 in the past month.

I'm getting my first AR this year. Cost aside, is an ACOG really that good? I could save up for one but I'd like to better understand why it's regarded as the best optic you can run.

I think they are fantastic. The optic is crystal clear, the adjustments are so precise, etc... Back several years ago when I was shooting nearly every day I could hit dimes at 200 yards on a good day.
This is what I use on my M4.

ACOG with a JPoint is hard to beat.

How well do they perform in close? Do they approach EO's and Aimpoints?

I didn't think so but I've seen marketing stating they work near and far. I guess if they do their job well enough far, near isn't an issue

I've had the red reticle acog on my Daniel Defense for two years. I've gone through 4 close quarter marksmanship classes and never had a problem shooting at 5 to 7 yards, both eyes open. I've never shot an EOTECH or Aimpoint so I have nothing to compare it to. My acog is a 4X32 is seems great for both close and far shots.
