Default Colt mags

Out of desperation, I tried some Colt brand mags in my Series 80, and they actually worked better than Wilsons. So I stocked up on them while they were on sale at Midway. (still on sale for $16.99)

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct...tNumber=815261

Then I did the unthinkable...I tried them in my DW! While not quite as good as the Wilsons in the DW, they are close. And at half the price of the Wilsons, they are a fantastic bargain.

As I said, they are not quite as good, meaning not every one of the mags is 100%. So every time I go to the range, I pick one mag and only use it. If it gets through the session with no malfunctions, it gets set aside as a contender. Any malfunctions, and it goes into the also-ran collection, along with the CMs and PMs. (I won't name names so as not to offend anyone's sensibilites ) Once all the mags have been vetted, those that pass will get base pads, and the "rejects" will all be used in the Colt (with which I don't require 100.00% reliability)

So far, I have identified two contenders and one also-ran. The two contenders now have Wilson glue-on base pads and I used them in Saturday's IDPA match with zero malfunctions.

On the left, a fully tested mag with Wilson glue-on base pad (which I used last Saturday in an IDPA match). In the center a reject. On the right, a mag that has not been fully tested.

Perhaps I should mention that I am testing these with Lee Tumble Lube bullets, not hardball. The bullets are seated shorter than hardball rounds, and the nose is somewhat sticky - in other words less than ideal conditions. The "rejects" would probably never have a problem with hardball ammo, or even with plated or hollow point ammo.

Haven't heard of the "hybrid" mags, but since these are not like anything I've ever seen I'll guess that's what they are. The follower is the main difference that I see:

thats a Check-Mate patented follower. Hopefully someone more knowlegable than me can chime in on what feedlips you have. They look like standard straight ones, but Im not 100% certain lol. The hybrid lips taper from narrow-to-wider as you approach the front of the mag if you are looking at it from above just like in your pic. The hybrid lips are suppose to give alot more of a controlled feed than Wilsons.

I just figured I would mention them to you in case you havent heard of them or tried one....I hear great things about the design and its controlled feed.

hope that helps

Doc, , just for clarity if you'll look at this wonderful example of bad photography, the mag on the left is a Hybrid, on the right is a modified Hybrid. The Colt mags you showed doc are standard lip mags, the third type is Wadcutter mags and they have shorter feed-lips than hybrids.

those are pics of his mags...which I didnt think were hybrids. Here's a borrowed pic of the hybrid lips (which you can order with either follower style if I remember correctly)
