bead blasting advice
So with my Caspian build this summer, I chose stainless and I have a stainless PT1911, as well. As part of that build I'm striving to do as very much of the work as I possibly can do myself to include bead blasting although I know I could send it out for a fraction of the cost associated with a compressor, blast cabinet, and glass beads.
I plan to buy a 10+CFM, 30-60 gallon compressor and a table top cabinet. I'll be using whatever fine/extra fine glass beads, I think they're 270+ in grit, I'm after the satin finish with probably something polished like the slide flats which I'd polish and mask off. This will be my first time blasting and I'll practice on scrap and then on the PT1911. But, I don't know about technique here. Any advice? I assume that you keep the nozzle moving and just avoid missing a spot, but if held in one spot would glass beads of that grit just keep wearing the surface? Would the beads keep digging and digging and digging if held in one spot? Or is constant movement paramount? |
