Frankenstein half MIMber, half RIA



I got a Mimber compact 22 conversion slide for my compact RIA. The full length Member slide was problematic, which I won't go into now, but I figured the compact slide would be lighter and cycle better...

AND IT DID!

The thing runs like a Singer! I had one failure to extract which was caused by an obvious squib, but other than that it ran through a couple hundred rounds like a champ right out of the box. No fitting required. And was surprisingly accurate. It shot dead on to point of aim at 10 yards.

With my ears getting old and suffering from Tinnitis and hearing loss in my left ear, I needed some way to practice with a compact 1911 that didn't hurt my ears. This is a companion piece to my Sig Ultra, which I dearly love, but which is real hard on my ears with full loads, even with double hearing protection (maximum rated plugs and muffs)

So I run through the plate racks, practicing my draw with the 22 for a while and then switch over to the Sig for a couple of mags. I have been doing this with the full length 22 slide, but it didn't have the same balance as the Ultra, and feel the same drawing. I now have an ultra compact 22 1911 that is as close to the same weight and size to the Sig Ultra as I can get. (Sig has aluminum frame, steel slide, MIM-Rock has steel frame, aluminum slide)

BTW, after waiting forever for someone to get this in stock, I finally ordered the slide online from Kim... uh, I mean, MIMber. Took about a week.

I had a .22 full size model, shot well, liked it but was picky about ammo so sold it. Kind of wish I still had it now though.

I ran the MIM-Rock in a steel match this morning. The first stage was a disaster, but it was the ammo . AutoMatch used to be great but this box was misfiring and failing to cycle the action. I switched to a different gun for the second stage, and it got even worse.

So I switched to Armscor ammo and they ran flawlessly until I ran out. Then I broke out the Mini-Mags and they ran flawlessly too. (I usually save those for tree rats) Then after the match, I ran some plate racks with various ammo, and even the usually terrible Remington Thunderbolts ran great. I have a lot of AutoMatch, so I'm hoping it was just that one box.

On the close targets I was keeping up with the race guns with some times less than 2 seconds. I was having some trouble hitting the smaller and farther targets though.
