For the past 28 years, I've worked as a Civil Servant for the U.S. Navy doing flight test of fixed wing tactical jets (F-14 and F/A-18, mostly), the last 15 years of that as an academic and flight instructor teaching military aviators how to be test pilots.
Started out as an aircraft lineman (fueling and parking aircraft) during last two years of high school and first year of college to earn money to learn to fly, build time and ratings. Needing to support myself and earn money for college, decided to enlist and spent 4 1/2 years active duty USAF as avionics technician from 1980-1984 (C-130s at Dyess and McCleland AFBs, then A-10s at RAF Woodbridge and then RAF Bentwaters, UK). Got out and went to GaTech to study Aerospace Engineering, working as a security guard to pay tuition. Last edited by BeerHunter; 10-29-2014 at 01:49 PM. Reason: cleared out orphaned word |

For the past 30 years I have ground up baby seals to make ozone depleting products, worked at a chemical manufacturing plant.
For about six years before that I delivered pesticides and herbicides to the AG pilots in Kansas and Oklahoma. Most were retired vets and some of the most interesting nuts I have ever met and got to know. I even hauled trash for BFI with one of the commercial front loaders that dump the little dumpsters. I tried for six months to make it one day without some kind of breakdown or problem. Never made it and quit. And when your the new guy you get the worse route. It was the nastiest filthy job I have ever done. And everything that can go wrong did, daily, for six months. Looking back now, I think I did the right thing turning down the UPS job. I bet it is just as bad as BFI. To all the vets here thanks. You guys are the best.
