Yep, eyes closed means he ain't dead. I always approach with his legs pointed towards me (but not close enough for him to kick me), and poke him in the eye with a long stick or my rifle muzzle to see if he blinks. And then poke him in the eye again to make sure.

That was !! Use the muzzle to poke him then maybe ok get to work.

Last fall we had a deer on the road that we thought was struck by a car, we pulled up, it was laying on the shoulder of I-90. Walked up to drag it off. When the young trooper grabbed its leg it went nuts and ran off. We laughed for hours......wish I had it on dashcam! It was wounded unfortunately and didn't put it down, that was the bad part we couldn't find it after that.
