Yep, eyes closed means he ain't dead. I always approach with his legs pointed towards me (but not close enough for him to kick me), and poke him in the eye with a long stick or my rifle muzzle to see if he blinks. And then poke him in the eye again to make sure.

That was
![]() Last fall we had a deer on the road that we thought was struck by a car, we pulled up, it was laying on the shoulder of I-90. Walked up to drag it off. When the young trooper grabbed its leg it went nuts and ran off. We laughed for hours......wish I had it on dashcam! It was wounded unfortunately and didn't put it down, that was the bad part we couldn't find it after that.
