I use neutral shoe polish from the grocery store.

Don't tell anyone, but I've used Mobile 1 engine oil as a case lube. Worked fine. Don't know that I'd recommend it, though.

I tip I learned with lanolin (from whatever source, like nursing mother cream) is to thin it with isopropyl alcohol (Heet from the local auto parts store).
