Consider frangible ammo. It was mandated at the indoor range I was a member of in Connecticut for rifle rounds. Going into the human body, it imparts all its energy at the same time. AKA... "makes a mess inside". But if it hits a wall, it might get through one sheet of sheet rock before it breaks up. Much better round for apartment/condo dweller IMHO.

Pistol for me as well, I'm well trained and can maneuver much easily with pistol in hand. I don't own a shotty or a black rifle.

Basic rule, know your target and what's behind it.

this^^^ is so simple but brilliant. But in the heat of the moment if a break in is happening most people I would bet don't think of this.

Correct, in fight or flight mode with adrenalin rushing through the veins, tunnel vision, and auditory exclusion, the last thing most non trained individuals are going to think about is background stop.

Remember also that if you are using a scatter gun, to use the proper load for your dwelling. Most, if not all, buckshot WILL penetrate through two drywall covered walls. Insulation will help slow it down but, it won't fully stop it. It has been said that birdshot is the load to use indoors for SD. The way that I have my shotgun staged, myself and my lady will be behind the gun. With that said, I'm running two shots of bird followed by six shots of #4 buck.

55 grain soft point prairie dog bullets. The original "frangibles."
However, I prefer a pistol caliber carbine loaded with hollow points because it's not as loud. I've lost enough hearing already.

Something people don't think of. now I know there may be no time for such things but I have hearing protection in my gun spot so if there is a break in I can grab gun, light, and the hearing protection for Kaden. I don't want Lisa to have her ears covered because if I have to yell something I need her to hear me. But we have our drill down and know what to if need be.
Planning people, plan and practice its critical.

My closest neighbor is 650 feet away. To get to the house you 're going to have to go through 2 electric fences or pry open the closed automatic gate. If you show up at the house uninvited with ill intent, you will get to meet my Mossberg 500 with a surefire X300 on it. Once good and blind I will load you up with some 00, 8 of'em if necessary. There's a 16 gallon shopvac and 2 gallons of bleach in the garage. I have done dry wall, and I'm sure I'll do it again sometime.
