When $1,500 becomes $800!
Late last year I stopped at one of my "regular" gun shops - Modern Elite Firearms in Hill Country Village, TX (surrounded by San Antonio). The owner, Chris, said you know about Colts right? I said sure. He came out with a very nice looking Gold Cup National Match with a 3 digit serial number, suffixed by a -NM. This was an early 1957 National Match - the first year of Colt's reintroduction of the GCNM.
The serial number side is almost perfect; Chris said the owner wanted $1,500 for it; but Chris disagreed with the value. Told the owner he wouldn't display it in the case but would put it on line. Then Chris turned it over and showed me the left side...OMG guys - the owner actually admitted to using a flat tip screwdriver to remove the slide stop! I told Chris I'd give the owner $800 for the gun - what I thought it was worth. Next day it was mine! You can tell in the pictures just what it is! at least the slide stop hides most of the damage! And now the ugly: I just ordered some semi-wadcutter match ammo to see how it shoots. If it's like any GCMN it should shoot well!
