Default Garand Tanker

First and foremost, it is not mine or my auction and I have no ties to it whatsoever. I just stumbled upon it after reading about it in the Firearm of the Day thread.

It is very light on details which would be a red flag for me. Something with as low a production number would have more research and information than this auction has. Either way I will watch this auction and would be curious to hear other discussion on this interesting piece of firearm history.

Serial number 1478907.

If someone could correct the title for me please. I didn’t notice the autocorrect doesn’t know Garand!

The one in the auction seems to have a different handguard as well as missing the metal band and short wood extension that is in all the pictures in the FOD thread except the 8th pic. Also it’s rollmark still says M1. Not sure if the rollmark was changed for the Tankers though.

It is using a m14 upper handguard.

The records concerning actual serials used in the T26 program don't exist. Experimental ones would have a T prefix for a serial.

There were only 200 real ones made. What records that do exist suggest that most of them were changed back into regular Garands. Obviously some did survive in the Tanker configuration.

There have been far more 'fake' tanker Garands made then the number of real ones that ever existed. Assume any tanker Garand you see to be a reproduction without documented paperwork from the original Springfield Armory.
