Hello from Orlando!
Hello fellow pistoleros!
After getting seriously tired of the bull$h!t from some "other forum" that shall not be mentioned, milkmanjoe suggested I signed up and participate in this fine forum. I contacted Mike (riverpigusmc), so here we are. I know a great deal of members in here already, having met quite a few in person. A little bit about me. I've been a dedicated gun scholar for the past 5 years, and a college professor for over 12 yrs. Naturally I saw the need to combine both interest so I recently started a side biz as a pistol instructor focused on instinctive/reactive point shooting. I enjoy discussing everything firearms and look forward to learn more about the mighty fine 1911 platform. I don't own a 1911 but they are such an iconic firearm that helped shape the freedoms we currently enjoy, and needless to say some are just a work of art, that I look forward to the day I own one. I need to do research as I want my first to be an entry level one, one I can tinker with without fearing screwing a $2,500+ gun in the process. Thank you and look forward to interacting and learning from all of you. Happy New Year. Pedro (pitor) |

Thx. I didn't mean to make Mike look insensitive, so if it came across as such I apologize. We're doing good, moving through this process. I will keep you all updated. We have a great place to stay and have our great Dane puppies with us. Life is good

I enjoyed meeting you, along with several other fine folks that hang their hats here, in Volusia last November. As far as getting a "budget" 1911 to start with; I recommend against that, and suggest getting a Colt (best bang for the buck in their price range). As long as you're swapping out/fitting parts (Rule #1 of working on 1911's; always "work" on the cheapest part); you won't damage the pistol itself beyond resurrection. Otherwise, regardless of how much you spend on quality parts; it'll always just be a cheap pistol. Start with a good quality one to begin with. I'd be pleased to have you look over my small collection of 1911's, and loan you one to shoot until you decide what you'd like to purchase. I have them in three, 3 1/2, four, 4 1/4, and five inch sizes; either lightweight, or all steel. (Can't loan you a guitar though; I have less of them than I do 1911's.:D) Happy New Year to you and yours! |
welcome from SD

Welcome Pitor. Good to see you here. Positive thoughts sent your way for the wife's health.

Hello Pitor,
Welcome. Nice to meet you. You will find that a 1911 is like a pair of rabbits. Almost behind your back they will follow you home, way beyond reason growing your collection. Prayers that 2015 will find you and your wife in good health and happy. Enjoy the action here. All the best. Dennis |
Howdy Buddy!
My Dobermans and I welcome you and your Dane :D Best wishes to you and your wife. I just went through a cancerous thyroid removal with mine last week. Not nice at all! Matt |
Thank you all for the warm welcome. Stay safe out there tonight.

I am insensitive...outside of COTEP. Had no idea your wife had health problems. You'll find we tend to pray for members and their families. Hope the Good Lord sees her through healthy and happy

Thank you again for the warm welcome. I have to head back to Orlando this Sunday and from here on drive back and forth on weekends. I've been in Jax with her for two weeks and it's killing me having to leave her and the Danes alone for the week days.
The neighborhood she is in is very mixed with lots of poverty and a high crime rate I'm sure, but it's walking distance to treatment center, which is vital as she's been getting dizzy spells from the radiation. She doesn't like guns for her and won't consider carrying one for the time being. She carries the Kimber pepper blaster ii and I think it is not wise as it only provides two shots. She misses and then what? Can any one recommend a stun gun that won't break the bank yet is reliable? The c2 taser looks awesome but it's $399. Can't do that right now. The cheaper models from Vipertek have such mixed reviews I'm very doubtful they'll work. They are great "noise makers" but do not really work great. |
Welcome to the neighborhood Pitor, nice to see you here. Our prayers are outbound for you and your wife.
You will find this site MUCH more sensitive and caring than the insanity you, and many others of us, left behind. |
Welcome aboard!

Welcome aboard, P. Again best wishes to the Mrs. Prayers her and your way.

Welcome to the insanity, thoughts and prayers for your wife.

Welcome pitor! Continual thoughts and prayers for your bride and I hope her time up in Jax goes wonderfully well! I did the work week commute between MD and St. Louis back in 1995 and home for the weekends back in 1995 so I know how much "fun" that is. Keep the faith!
Happy New Year, too! |
Fear all who enter here . ( Other forums become less interesting and boring )

Howdy from Georgia! I'm late to the party too, since I was out of town when the thread started.
The problem with getting a cheap 1911 to start is that it might give you a bad taste for 1911s. A good 1911 is a joy to own and shoot. A bad 1911 will have you pulling your hair out. As to someone else's suggestion to start with a Colt, well, all I can say is my Colt is the only one that had me pulling my hair out. I was fortunate that my first 1911 was a used DW that I bought at a pawn shop for $500, and not the Colt, otherwise I'd be one of the a 1911 haters. If you just want to get familiar with the platform and like to tinker, I'd go with a Rock Island. Rough around the edges, but they are "real" 1911s. (solid steel, standard parts, no firing pin block safeties, etc.) http://www.cotep.org/forum/picture.p...&pictureid=888 |
