House Clearing..Do You Do It?

About a week or two ago I came home from work and had a weird/odd feeling when I entered my home. Knowing that the little lady was at work, I drew my pistol and proceeded to "clear" the house. It was all good in the hood but, I learned a few things I would like to share.

First, we have way too many mirrors! Mirrors can be helpful to look around corners or different areas without actually being in that area but, they also can give your possition away to a perp hiding.

Second, in a split floor plan with the front door in the center......which dirrection do you clear first considering either way will put your back towards one of the areas...?... I chose to clear the kitchen/dining area first as it was a smaller room/s. Then proceeded to clear the bedrooms and baths. I did find it difficult to pie the main living room because, it is an "open" area as soon as you enter the house. So, I have evaluated my floor plan and came up with what works best my my situation.

I quess my point in this post is to find out if anyone practices clearing rooms or their entire house from time to time? I never did but, after this experience I will. Always follow gun safety rules, especially if their are others around.

Lets hear your opinions/experiences in house clearing..

Only time I clear mine is finding out which room that woman is in and not going there

If my three dogs are acting normal when I drive up, I have nothing to worry about. If there is anything amiss they'll let me know exactly where to look. God, I love dogs!!! ;)

Have only "cleared" my house once. About a year or so ago, around 3 am, the garage door suddenly opened. Our bedroom is directly above the garage so you can imagine our surprise. I grabbed the Cbob and Mayla had her Ruger 22, she wanted to take part also :D. We found nothing except a possessed garage door opener, it'd happened before but during the daytime. Since then we unplug it every night and when we leave for more than a day.

Wouldnt it be easier to buy a new one? :p

Never clear my house....I have indicators that if not in place I back away. I would call LE and have them wait outside if bad people needed to leave, AFTER I activated the ammonia dump.

I have been trained in how to clear a house etc. If there was not an immediate need for me to clear it, I would wait for the LEO's. I think you should have contingencies for clearing your house from different rooms, entrances. It is good to plan it out before you have to do it.

I'm a pipefitter by trade, electrical control wiring by education.......ya can't get one, ya gotta build one. But I do give fair warning in six languages.

No I don't worry about that. I had a instance a few years ago that the wife forgot to close the gate and garage door. I got back to the house after the neighbor called me and let me know. I parked my truck and started walking up to the house with my LCP in hand. Walked around the house and noticed nothing was a miss looking inside the windows. Thats when I decided to go and close everything up and get back to work. Otherwise I would have called the PBSO if I saw anything strange in the house and waited blocking the driveway with my truck.

Then I bought a good holster for the 1911 and ended up selling the LCP.

I typically don't, but have on a couple of occasions.

TLE2 07-12-2014 09:16 PM

What I have read says that a single person should not attempt to clear, that only two or more trained persons should.

Paladin1 07-13-2014 10:48 AM

I put down routinely but it is more like occasionally. I make sure to do so when everyone is out of the house and with dummy rounds in my pistol but once a month or so seems to be plenty often enough.

Plus one
Our senior instructor is our county's senior instructor and swat instructor. He will teach everything to private citizens EXCEPT clearing. Said they do that in teams. IF home and only me and bump in the night, will huddle in corner and call LE...fatal funnel. If kids home, will seek out evil. If coming home and notice, call LE. They will come in a pack, wear body armor, better trained, have many guns and are much braver. I'm still waiting for the bg who wears a bg sign, stands still...in front of a block wall and says, "ok, shoot me". That hasn't happened yet. :)
Oh, I too will use the ammonia dump.
