cool - someone missed me. :)

I've really been sidelined with back issues... I finally got into the back surgeon, and we did the MRI yesterday. He's bringing me back in this Friday for a pair of cortisone epidural injections to see if that'll help, but he pretty much thinks we are looking at surgery.

In the mean time, I can't sit or stand for any length of time. And it doesn't help to lay down. I'm not using opioid meds so that if I do require surgery, they'll be more effective. But it pretty much sucks right now.

Alright, you will be in My Prayers and Thoughts till you get your epidurals..............

I hope they help..........

Quick Update

Thanks for all of the kind words of support and prayers in my behalf. I have PMs, text messages, notes here and a phone call from the Padre. You really know who your friends are by who's there when you're down a bit.

The epidural was today. All I can say is - OH MY HELL!!! - pardon the french. I have now reset the bar on pain intensity. This is the first time I've had the injection on the left side, and apparently, there wasn't much room between the nerve root and the bone, but the Doc was undeterred. He worked it in there and pumped several gallons (what it felt like) of cortisone in there.

By the time he finished (seemed like HOURS), I was soaked in sweat, had tears streaming down my face, and dang near bit a hole in the pillow I was laying on.

This evening, and the Novocain has worn off, and it really hurts. Really. :) I've decided the purpose is more of a threat: "Keep complaining about your little pains and we'll do THIS again." :)

I'll be fine - thanks again to my COTEP family for the love and concern. I have too many things to be thankful for to complain about the little bumps in the road.

Nope. No way. I'm done with that. This Doc even said "Wow there's a lot of arthritis in there." If I do anything, it'll be surgery to clean out the gunk.

AutoMag 11-16-2012 07:47 PM

Lane, I hope that you are OK my friend!!! It hurts me just thinking of what you went through with that shot.

My wife also had that done and it is not something that you would want done!!!

Big Smoke 02-12-2013 12:32 PM

Lane, have you tried one of those zero gravity things where you hang upside down? Just thinking it may help relieve some pain by hanging upside down and letting the vertebrae go back the other direction for a bit.

Ron, you're not supposed to have her do it nude with you behind the rack!

Hey guys.. and gals!!

I figured after calls from Clyde, the Padre and John wondering why I've abandoned my family, I'd better check in. Seems like when life gets a bit rocky, I tend to pull in, rather than reaching out for help.

I was originally scheduled for surgery on 1/28, but due to new insurance that started at the first of the year, I had to find a new surgeon and hospital in order to not be stuck with $85K in medical bills. Now, we are set, and going under the knife next Wednesday (2/22). The new doctor is more conservative and only going to fuse the joint at L5-S1 (I'm good with that - the original plan was to fuse all three joints from L3-S1.)

In the mean time, I'm trying to get things tidied up with my day job so that I can focus on a quick recovery. It'll be good to get over - I'm pretty much in pain 24/7 down both legs. Can't sit, stand or sleep. Other than that I'm good. :) The disk has almost completely failed resulting in bone on bone irritation. Sucks getting old. Ask Clyde.

Any way - thanks for all the kind thoughts and calls. I need to remember that COTEP is a close knit group of friends who support each other through good times and bad. And I need to remember that many here deal with much worse health problems than this.

Lane

AutoMag 02-14-2013 08:14 AM
