Knife of the Day
Let's see if I can make it a year by posting a different knife of the day!
Let's start it off with this Phil Booth Double Action Auto Liner Lock. It can open like a normal liner lock; or push the damascus oval in the scale and it snaps open with authority: http://iwantthatknife.com/Gallery/al...booth_da_4.jpg http://iwantthatknife.com/Gallery/al...booth_da_3.jpg http://iwantthatknife.com/Gallery/al...booth_da_2.jpg http://iwantthatknife.com/Gallery/al...booth_da_1.jpg |

There’s some nice work in that knife.

Nice! Thanks for sharing.

Day Two!
Here's one of several knives made by retired Air Force CMGST William C. "Bill" Johnson. Bill and his wife are great people. Over the 17 years I've known them we have become good friends.
The knife uses a Sterling Silver handle from some kitchen knife, spoon, or other utensil; the sheath is elephant hide and stitched with silver wire.... http://iwantthatknife.com/Gallery/al...ing_dagger.jpg |
Day 3 Ed Kalfayan Persian Knife and bonus dagger!
I acquired both of these Ed Kalfayan Knives from an on-line Texas Gun Shop. I know that the dagger sold for $2,000 the first time it was sold; the Persian about $1,600. I paid less then $1,300 total for both of them, about a year apart. I really don’t think they knew what they had! Enjoy.

I really like that dagger! Those are works of art.

Knife of the Day; Day 4
Here's a very well made knife, made by a maker named McPherson; I've never found anyone who knows of him or his work. The knife scales are made from original Westinghouse Micarta; which yellows like ivory over time. The knife has a leather sheath; covered in pigskin.
The Nude scrimshaw was done by my ex-wife who is a very proficient artist. http://iwantthatknife.com/Gallery/al...nude_scrim.jpg |
That’s beautiful. You are right tho, I’ve never heard of that maker.

That 'Westinghouse Micarta' adds quite a nice touch along with the beautiful scrimshaw work ... 2 http://www.cotep.org/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif up !!

Day 5
A Triple Play! Colt's M45A1 - the Non-Custom Shop copy of the 1911 supplied to the Marine Corps by Colt. The only difference is the slide roll mark; even the serial number with the EGA (Eagle, Globe, Anchor) suffix.
A 1911 Stock fixed blade knife by talented Ohio Knife Maker Mickey Yurco; with a set of M45A1 stocks for the handle of the knife; And they are resting on an authentic Navajo Rug supposedly woven by Bessie Manygoats, one of the better weavers... http://iwantthatknife.com/Gallery/al...un_Knife_1.jpg since I'd taken the above picture i found a set of the correct grip screws for the knife handles. |
nice. I had one of those 1911 knives. I remember when they were first released. I have since lost mine someplace while hunting. Still not super happy about that. Mine was not by same maker but the company that did the mass production of them. Don't remember the name though.

I like that Colt! I was never a fan of those 1911 knives but, I can appritiate the craftsmanship that went into that one.

Day 6 Roger "Mudbone" Jones Beaver Tail Bowie
Day 6; a bit different knife.
I count "Mudbone" as a friend. His knives are all handmade; no power tools have been injured in the making of his knives. Roger made this Beaver Tail Bowie out of a horse rasp. What looks like serrations on the blade is from the teeth of the file. In typical Mudbone Fashion he was busy sewing the sheath for this knife at the show when I bought it from him. http://iwantthatknife.com/Gallery/al...beavertail.jpg http://iwantthatknife.com/Gallery/al...l_sheathed.jpg |
That one is interesting. What is the handle made of?

I don't know how old the McPherson knife is, but is sure is good looking. Your unknown knife maker might be one of the ones in this list.

Day 7 Don Cowles
http://iwantthatknife.com/Gallery/al...cowles_two.jpg
A pair of Don Cowles "Gentleman's Pocket Knives. I ordered these from Don for my wife and I - my wife's knife is the long slender knife is called a "Mistress" and mine, the other; called "The Hump." What's not to like? Damascus blades, Mokume bolsters, ivory scales. |
That Mokume-gane is some very interesting material, to say the least, and matches up very nicely with the Damascus !
|
Those are purdy.

Day 8 - Something Special
I'm not telling the following story not for any pats on the back; but to just share it with you all:
I bought these knives, known as "The Bears" from Fred Rowe sometime around 2007 or 2008. My ex-wife did the scrimshaw of the Grizzly Bears on the crown of the stag. Fred only sent the handles to be scrimshawed but it wasn't until a knife show that I saw them....I was able to buy them at a great price; and sent them to Sandy Morrissey in TN for sheaths. Invariably, when talking with Fred (he's also a close friend) the discussion would end up talking about the Bears. I sort of sensed Fred regretted selling them; once even stating that. He always spoke of them like they were a lover who got away. I wrestled with a thought for a few months; finally for Christmas 2017 I wrapped the knives up and sent them to Fred's wife - to be opened by Fred on Christmas Day. According to Fred's wife Fred's eyes leaked a little of salty water! One of the best friend moments ever! It was without doubt one of the best things I've ever done for a friend. To close the loop on this story - I spent 4 days in the ICU and another 3 days in the hospital last April with a Pulmonary Embolism. My wife brought a cardboard box to me one day from Fred. He sent me a batch of his Iced Ginger Cookies. The box seemed heavier then a box of cookies should weigh - Fred made me a knife and sent it to me! Without further discussion - here's "The Bears!!" http://iwantthatknife.com/Gallery/al.../the_bears.jpg And here's the knife Fred sent me while I was in the hospital: http://iwantthatknife.com/Gallery/al.../Feather_1.jpg Feather Damascus |
Day 9 Gene Baskett 1911 Knife
Gene is the President of the Knife Makers Guild; and makes great knives. Although not the first custom maker to make a knife using 1911 Pistol grips for a handle he is one of the pioneers of this genre. I have two of his 1911 Stock Knives; one with Pachmeyr Grips (marked #5) and this one, the best use of VZ Stocks in my Opinion. Gene attaches the scales with Torx screws; the screw heads where you'd normally attached them to the pistol are decorative only.

Wow, those Bear knives are badass! Good move on gifting them to your friend, well played.

Day 10 The Master of the Recurve
Mister Jim Siska!
I've admired Jim's work for a long time but had never met him until about 5 years ago at an Easton, PA Knife Show. The luck of the draw put are tables next to each others. By the end of Day 1 Jim was down to 2 or 3 knives; on day #2 Jim had one knife left so it became mine! It wasn't cheap but I suspect that Jim cut me some slack when I asked him how much! http://iwantthatknife.com/Gallery/al...siska_14_2.jpg |
Day 11 - Something Different
Rick Hinderer makes some pretty awesome folding knives; so it kind of surprised me when I found these two knives by Rick. The first is his take on a Chute Knife; the other - a damascus "letter opener". The letter opener is marked "RH" - several years ago at a knife show in Ohio Rick looked at it, said it was his work, and wrote the info on the back of one of my business cards.

The Chinese Red Dragon is a Fire Dragon and also means power. This Dick Atkinson Flat Sided Dagger has elephant ivory scales and the dragon was scrimshawed by my ex-wife Dianne Macalonan.
