Help me identify a round.
If you fine people can help me identify a round. The following pictures were sent to me by a friend asking to identify a particular round.
The first picture is a comparison with a .223 and a .30-06. The second picture is of the primer, which as you can see, is deeply recessed. Thanks. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pshnrgwnil.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps7ftnldcc.jpg |
no clue but I want to shoot it!

My guess is that it was used in a rifle with a tubular magazine. Hence the recessed primer - to avoid setting off rounds in the magazine by the pointy bullet.
What rifle, I have no idea. Need to know caliber and length of case at least. Base diameter and rim diameter would help. http://www.cotep.org/forum/picture.p...pictureid=1046 |
Never seen that one before. Sorry, can't help you out on this one.
Looks like a really old round, pig will know (it's from his time). :p PS: I posted your question on two military surplus forums I belong to. Maybe, they will know. |

One person from another forum says..... "It looks a little like a 416 Rigby-ish, although that neck looks a little long". He requested measurements, including case, case neck, and projectile.

I think it may be an anti-tank round. Possibly a Boys Rifle (English), or a DHSK (Dishka, Soviet), or a Hotchkiss anti-tank.

The neck is too long and it appears to be rimmed. http://www.cotep.org/forum/picture.p...pictureid=1046 |
I'm going to say it is an Ackley Improved version of the 450/400 Nitro Express 3 1/4".
Here is the 450/400 Nitro Express 3 1/4". Blow out the shoulder and you should have something dang close: http://www.kynochammunition.co.uk/ca...0-400%20NE.jpg http://www.cotep.org/forum/picture.p...pictureid=1046 |
Based on the material and shape of the projectile, which appears to be steel, I would lean towards this being an anti tank / anti aircraft round. Without a micrometer reading.... I'm guessing its a 20mm x 105b anti tank round. Picture below:
https://www.google.com/search?newwin...KQ-I5lzN0KM%3A Second guess would be the Soviet 14.5mm round (similar to our beloved 50 cal)... but the shell profile isn't as close to the 20mm.... Let us know when you figure it out! DaFadda |
Looks to me like a .458 WinMag that went through the crimping die too far........Notice the neck has no shoulder, the crimping die was set too deep.
