Spare Mammouth Parts....
My full size Wilsons with old tooth and tusk shoes. One .45 w/ Baron Blue finish, one 38 Super in Stainless and one 9MM in Turnbull Blue. Photo is not really representative of how nice they are. Grips by Dan Chinnock, top and bottom, and Brian Challlis, middle, are much more stunning than they appear.

those are really nice Dennis!
I just bought some Mammoth tooth scales last week. I've never worked with it before so i'm interested to see how they turn out. |
those are nice looking

Very nice looking pistols . . . really like the top and middle. The grips contrast well with the finish.

Those are very nice!

Great trio with beautiful stocks!

Tooth or tusk? I've hunted mammoth teeth before and they're not big enough for scales.

Top is tusk sliced like a tree with similar rings as below.
http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2cc3ba3e.jpg the middle is tooth -molar- sliced top to bottom as below http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/...pspg28oas1.jpg and the bottom is tooth slice horizontally front to back as below http://i1306.photobucket.com/albums/...ps881c6af8.jpg Thanks for looking.. mammoth tooth below http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/...mammoth2-3.jpg |

That is awesome!!! I like that kind of stuff. Just classy

I like how they have the metal border around them!!!

I've got a nice big piece of mammoth tusk [ 1/3 of the round that's 10 inches long and about 10" in circumference ] I've been trying to get a few knifemakers to use on one of my bowies for years. They won't touch it for fear of ruining the rest of the piece on me even though I told them to go for it, I'd be fine with one set of grips out of it.
Nice looking mammoth grips sir |
Dang, those are sharp !!

Zane, Brownie, or anyone else...
Both Brian and Dan mount their mammoth on reinforcement backing. As you can see Dan mounts his in either a silver or black surround. Brian has reinforcement backing recommended if you planning to shoot the gun. I can take detailed pictures of the backs of the grips if that would be of value in your projects. Let me know. It is pretty intimidating I think to start and the material is expensive to start experimenting with but the results are awesome, I think. I have seen some a lot prettier than mine but you never know what you will end up with after the scales are shaped and polished. Every one is different and the change as the colors many times do not penetrate the entire piece. THANKS for the nice comments guys. They are appreciated. Dennis |

Check out www.danchinnock.com He makes great knives with mammoth grips all the time.. You may well be able to work a deal for your bowie grips in exchange for the remainder of the tusk piece. He is a solid gentleman and a great craftsman. Give him a call. Nothing to lose. You may know all of this already, but if not it may be worth pursuing. Dennis |
