My new pistol rack

Ok, first off, it's not done and second, I didn't build it. I gave my neighbor the drawings and dimensions and he built it today.

I was tired of seeing my guns looking like this in my safe:

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/...psef0f51b6.jpg

Based on some racks I"d seen on the web, I drew up plans for this:

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6fc6a3f7.jpg

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/...psb84f8e58.jpg

Why 2 pieces you ask? Well, my safe is 16" wide with 1" jambs. So without having to remove the top shelf to slip the stand in, we split it into 2, so that I can still access the revolver in the back.

I still have to stain/paint and put the felt on. But you get the idea.

What's that empty slot on the far left for? Oh, that's for Mr. Baer when he comes in........:D

Yes, I just noticed the hammer being cocked on the Kimber without the safety engaged, no round is in the chamber. I fixed it, I just didn't want to take new pics.

Thanks for looking.

Riverpigusmc 12-22-2013 09:46 PM

nice. You keep guns without rounds in the chamber?

MajO 12-22-2013 10:23 PM

Very nice.

AutoMag 12-22-2013 10:39 PM

Looking good Ellison but I bet that you could have built them also!!!:)

Caleb 12-22-2013 10:56 PM

BadOscar 12-22-2013 11:55 PM

Pretty cool Ellen.

DaFadda 12-23-2013 06:24 AM

Ellison.... pease save me some work and email me the drawings for this? I'm going to make one in my shop too. This is going to be beautiful when its done! No drawings? send the dimensions then..... particularly drill bit width that he used for the slide holders, and the spacing between each of the slots. thanks in advance!

+Michael

I had my brother make me the same thing, works great. I just had taken the rack for my rifles out and used that template for the barrel rest for the pistols...worked great...

Nice Rack there, Ell

looks great Ell.

BlackKnight 12-23-2013 03:54 PM

Very nice, but if I may ask a question? What's the reason for the extra piece of wood at the base of the vertical piece where it meets the base? All you would have to do was dado the piece into the base. Just curious?

KeystoneWeaponBK 12-23-2013 05:01 PM

That's really nice, I like the idea and it fits really nicely… much much better than the "Pile o' gun" method from before :-)

AutoMag 12-23-2013 05:16 PM

Tony, I see what you are referring to. It looks like it might have been added for height I would guess.

skosh69 12-23-2013 09:57 PM

Thanks guys...yes I could've prolly made them myself but I would've used 3-4 times the wood and considering my neighbor has a complete woodworking set up in his garage and all I have is a Skilsaw and a drill, it was easier to just assist him....meaning I stood there and watched.....:D

Caleb 12-23-2013 10:28 PM

Geeze, how long does it take to put fuzz on your wood?

Que pig in 5.....4......3.......2.....

AutoMag 12-23-2013 10:42 PM

I know the feeling Ellison... I "assisted" MPrimo one Saturday afternoon while "we" took one of my 1911's down to the frame, did some trigger and slide work.... then put it back together. Yes, I felt truly inadequate! But I learned a LOT!

Roger that Padre....been there, done that!

I'll get the info on the rack in an email to you asap. Really easy and simple to draw up. You'll be hearing from me soon.

Thanks again guys!

You guys ever need help with something like that let me know.
It would probably help though, to tell you guys I was a cabinet maker for 10 years before I left it for my current profession.

Now you speak up, :facepalm2: funny

So you understand Tony, as a cabinet maker, it's sometimes easier to do it yourself than to try and show someone how to do it, hence my neighbor and myself. He knows how to use his tools already with great skill. He knows exactly what steps have to be taken to get to the finished product. Had I done it, we'd probably still be cutting holes and such, LOL.

AutoMag 12-24-2013 12:13 PM

If we knew that Tony was a cabinet maker we could have gotten Clyde's gun box made from him and I bet it would not have taken a freaking year to do so!!!!! I will never understand that but then again enough of that, I do not need to get going on that cluster freak!!!!

Woah, woah. lets not get carried away. I can make simple stuff like gun racks, but I don't have the facilities for anything like a gun box. I wish, but I don't have the room and even then only during summer months as I do the work on my deck. Sorry. :o

So...............does this rack have felt on it yet?

OK smart ass...finally got sometime today to put the felt on the racks. Truth be told, I covered them last weekend but had to peel it all off. Why you ask? Well, when I measured the thickness of the slides and cut the slots, I didn't factor in the thickness of the felt :facepalm2:. So after covering them, it was a wee bit of a struggle to get the guns in their slots, that's if they even fit, which a few didn't. So with the help of a dremel, I shaved the slots and also I took a 1/2" of the top to make putting them away a little easier, so voila'...finished racks.

By all means, they ain't perfect, but they're functional!
