Stripping Her Down to the Frame

This is a link that "Hoss" gave me and I thought others may want to see it to. Its is very well done and you can go at your own pace, which makes it better than a video.

So for those brave souls (actually its pretty easy) here tiz:

Have at it!!!

Very nice, clear and concise. I gotta print this. I've been wary of taking one apart for fear it'd be apart a long time.

Thanks,
Jim

Cool..I have manuals, and I gotta check out what Clyde sent me, but these pictures are BIG. Thanks

Thedragonslayer 08-27-2011 06:32 PM

Chief has sent me two very good manuals. The level of detail in parts and names is excellent. :)

But this is designed to help you get it a part and back together spacifically.

Grizzman 08-27-2011 08:24 PM

After a week and a half of basically no firearm access, I'll be trearing my 1911s down after I get home.

I plan to use the How I Did It documents.

detail stripping is a sinch. :)

2TransAms 08-27-2011 11:49 PM

Yeah, it's not tough. But the diagrams make it a lot easier. :)

I took that "BIG STEP" last night and stripped mine, It was a lot easier then i thought, with the help of Clyde (moral support) and Dave Waits who made sure i had done the safety checks, and the link Noel posted made it less stressful.

Glad it worked out for you Ed. Or did it? All I see is pieces. Lol.

That is a very nicely done explanation. I wish I'd had that the first time I ripped everything apart. One thing that I do a bit differently - Bob Rodgers wrote an article a while back about stripping and cleaning your 1911. He recommends NOT having it in battery when turning the barrel bushing - but having something that won't mar the finish in the ejection port so that the slide is back a bit. This'll keep a nice tight custom fit barrel nice and tight.

Thanks Doug, and yes it worked out all the pieces went back together and all safety checks passed, but shooting it will be the test

When you shoot it only load the mag with a couple rounds to test first. Full auto 1911 probably isn't fun when your not expecting it.

I found a YouTube video which is actually pretty good. There are two videos, one for Disassembly, and one for Reassembly.

Dissasembly:

Reassembly:

Hope you find them as helpful as I did.

It sounds intimidating but once you do it once and learn the little tricks its easy. I enjoy detail stripping my 1911s and feel extremely satisfied after a thorough cleaning. Only thing better than a clean 1911 is a hot dirty one. (same could be said for women evilnanner)

Woo Hoo...I just used the link posted by Noel and took her down to the frame and it went back together easier than I thought!

Didn't have to take to a gunsmith in a box......

I did end up with a baggy of extra parts.......just like Greg Brady did when he rebuilt that '57 Chevy convertable.
